background
In 2023, Which Side was approached by CNalysis founder Chaz Nuttycombe to play a pivotal role in a new, groundbreaking project he was developing. State Navigate, a site that would give data nerds and politicos alike an all-in-one look at state legislatures in all 50 states. Which Side was there from the beginning.
objective
Which Side needed to establish a visual identity for the new project, and then play a crucial role in facilitating its online establishment and growth. Since State Navigate is a web-based resource, we knew that we had to lay a solid foundation to build upon well into the future. Our role involved several phases: establishing a brand, creating a website to disseminate information, building the foundation of the finished product, and marketing the resource to interested parties across all fifty states.

branding
State Navigate’s brand development started with a slogan: “your compass for state legislatures.” From there, we incorporated elements of early-modern navigation, harkening to the country’s founding. State Navigate’s brand was built to be easily expanded into sub-brands for each state.
marketing
Once we had a solid foundation built on the site, Which Side took over the reins of marketing the product to new audiences. Through social media, we created and distributed eye-catching graphics on site features, race updates, donation asks, and more. Through email, we distributed press releases and regular feature updates to the mailing list of loyal State Navigate followers.
Which Side supplied branded items for State Navigate on the ground fundraising events, including business cards, prospectuses, event flyers, and more. These items were crucial in the early stages of gathering fundraising and investors for the projects.
web design
Unlike our campaign work, where the website is a resource used to sell a candidate, with State Nav, the website is the product. With this in mind, we knew that we needed to build a strong foundation over time to have success. Our team laid out a solid Phase I build that allowed the State Nav team to sell their idea to donors.
When the time for expansion came, we worked closely with a team of data directors and backend developers to design a cohesive experience. The Phase II version of State Navigate’s site includes statewide RSS feeds, blogs, district summaries, candidate data, bill summaries, and so much more.
