It’s easy to think that a website and social media are all you need to market your political campaign, but that’s not the case. Though the world has gone digital, you can’t forget about old reliable print. Here are a few reasons why a newsletter, a flyer, or a yard sign still can make all the difference.
1 - Online Isn’t Foolproof
An ad can go viral, a website can be perfect, or a tweet can take off. But a constituent who isn’t on social media or whose algorithm isn’t picking you up might never see it – even if they live next door.
Print brings your campaign off the screen and helps you reach people who aren’t as online. It’s also a huge help for events or canvassing to have flyers that show your brand and mission at a glance, so they can remember you and find out about your mission. Print is also more inclusive of people who aren’t as internet savvy or lack access; that’s worth thinking about if you’re campaigning in a rural, older, poorer area.
2 - When Everything Is Digital, Print Is Special
Most of us interact with the world through a screen. That has led to doomsday predictions about the end of books, newspapers, and, of course, print advertising. Print can still cut through the noise. It’s not simply a delivery method, but an object in and of itself.
Sending a special newspaper to donors or handing one out at special events works as a souvenir and informs them about the year too, and you can experiment with design, color, and even touch! The extra effort makes the print feel precious.
3 - A Wonderful Way to Show Your Brand
Sometimes you want your campaign to be known at a glance, and nothing is better for that than an amazing yard sign. The ideal yard sign shows off your campaign’s energy at a glance, far away or close up.
We designed Mary Peltola’s 2024 brand to speak to capture her Alaska roots. Her signage builds on the branding by adding nature-inspired elements and her fish mascot. Leveraging her name recognition, we opted to stick to the iconic “Mary Peltola” logo on the front side, with her slogan “Fish, Family, Freedom for the Future” on the back.
Signage combines the souvenir factor of the other examples with marketing, courtesy of your supporters. People will see it multiple times and remember your name, and potentially talk to their friends and neighbors. That’s an important tool in local races.
Print is still massively important as a support to a digital campaign, especially for targeted groups, part of events, and to encourage in-person interaction. You just have to make sure it gets the same care as digital marketing and to use it in a way that will count.
